CASE STUDY 1

OBJECTIVE:

To use a PP with low MFI (better mechanical properties) that is impossible to inject without ultrasounds.

CASE STUDY COMPONENT
Mould :        Two Cavity
Application   Automotive - Hubcap
Component Size :  445 x 40 x 2.5mm

RESULTS

After extensive research and material characterisation, it was discovered that a typical injection moulding material such as PP DOMOLEN 1100L with a MFI of 6 was able to be replaced by PP ISPLEN PB140 with a MFI of 3.5 using the following injection parameters

Injection Parameters:   P = 95 bar
                                 V = 40%
                                 Filling Time = 8s
                                 Water Cooling

This photo illustrates the component (top) moulded in usual material under normal conditions;
(middle) processing  PP ISPLEN PB140 without ultrasonics;
and (bottom) processing  PP ISPLEN PB140 with ultrasonics

Ultramelt successfully processed this low MFI material giving the component additional strength properties.  Impact strength  (Izod notched Impact Strength) is an important element of  automotive applications.

DOMOLEN 1100L                        MFI=6 g/10 min 3.5 KJ/m2

ISPLEN PB 140 MFI=3.5 g/10 min 11 KJ/m2
